If you’re just starting to think about the 11+, one of the first practical questions is: when does it actually take place?
The timing can feel a little confusing at first, but once you understand the general pattern, it becomes much clearer.
The Main Exam Period
Most 11+ exams for:
Grammar Schools take place in September of Year 6
Private Schools start from November of Year 6 and can continue into early January.
Although you must check with the school as this varies year on year.
This means children are tested very early in their final year of primary school.
For many families, this comes as a surprise because preparation often needs to begin well before that point.
Once you understand the timeline, the next step is knowing how to prepare effectively. I’ve shared a clear plan for this here if you have limited time: How to revise for the 11+ in 3 months.
What Happens Before the Exam
In the months leading up to September:
- children are usually completing practice papers
- schools may run familiarisation sessions
- registration deadlines take place (often in Year 5)
This is why many families begin preparing during Year 4 or early Year 5.
Registration Deadlines
Before your child can even sit the exam, you’ll need to register.
- Most registration opens in spring or early summer of Year 5
- Deadlines are often around June or July
Missing this step is one of the most common issues, so it’s worth keeping an eye on dates for your chosen schools.
Results and Next Steps
Grammar School Timings
After the exam in September:
- Results are usually released in October for Grammar Schools
- You then submit your school preferences (CAF form)
Offers are typically confirmed in March of Year 6.
Independent School Timings
Independent schools can vary slightly:
- Second stage exams (if the schools does them) often take place in December and January
- Many also have interviews, group assessments around December and January
- Results are normally the second week or February, but again these can vary depending on school.
Why Timing Matters
Because the exam happens so early in Year 6, preparation needs to be well underway beforehand.
Waiting until Year 6 to begin is often too late for most children.
Instead, a gradual build-up over time tends to work best.
This allows children to:
- develop confidence
- become familiar with question types
- improve steadily without pressure

A Reassuring Perspective
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you first see the timeline.
But in practice, preparation doesn’t need to be intense from the start.
Small, consistent steps are far more effective than last-minute cramming.
Final Thoughts
Most 11+ exams take place in the Autumn term of Year 6, with preparation beginning much earlier, often in Year 5.
Understanding the timeline helps you plan ahead and avoid unnecessary stress.
With the right approach, you can support your child calmly and confidently through each stage of the process.
